Project Engineer - ITS/Signals
Location: Camp Hill

 
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Project Engineer is a 1-5 year professional who will assist in McMahon’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Traffic Signals group on a variety of projects under direct supervision of an experienced, licensed professional engineer. The ideal candidate will be working out of our Camp Hill, PA office.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Assist in the design of ITS systems and development of construction plans using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.
  • Assist in the design of roadway lighting systems using Computer Aided Lighting Analysis (CALA) software and development of construction plans using CAD software.
  • Assist in the development of bid packages for advertisement by the client.
  • Become familiar with ITS electrical, communication, and technology components.
  • Complete engineering analyses and design concepts of ITS system components such as dynamic message signs, CCTV cameras, roadway weather information systems, incident detection, highway lighting, traffic signals, communication systems, etc.
  • Prepare or modify reports, specifications, construction schedules, plans and designs for projects
  • Assist with field work, data collection, special studies, ITS planning studies, etc. as needed and required for design and analyses
  • Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, and response letters
  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary
  • Coordinate with technical staff as necessary

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • AutoCAD and/or Microstation experience is a plus
  • PENNDOT and/or Pennsylvania Turnpike design plan development experience is a plus
  • Knowledge in communications systems is a plus
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to present to supervisors
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 1 – 5 years’ work experience required

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED: 
  • Engineering-In-Training Preferred

This position assists in the oversight of all activities associated with the Department's transformational technologies program; formulates, recommends, and implements statewide laws, regulations, standards, procedures, polices, and guidelines related to transformational technologies; represents the Department at local, state, and national meetings; speaks to professional groups, MPOs/RPOs, and other stakeholders; provides presentations, briefings, and reports on areas of responsibility; provides technical assistance and support to the Districts on areas of responsibility and coordinates with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and other areas of the Department; assists in the Department's incorporation and implementation of the Pennsylvania Statewide Connected and Automated Vehicle Strategic Plan; and develops and manages PennDOT's initial implementation plans for various transformational technologies.

It also oversees the development of various publications; the incorporation of transformational technologies into the Department's long range transportation plans; the development of strategies and guidance for the deployment of transformational technologies; the tracking and management of allocated budget; ensuring funding levels are known throughout the year, projects are properly tracked, issues are identified and resolved; the development of various transformational technologies training programs; and the development and implementation of strategies for procurement of transformational technologies. It assists with the development and reporting of performance metrics for applicable pilots and deployments; Coordinates all activities related to the Automated Vehicle Task Force, Pennsylvania Automated Vehicle Summit, and Highly Automated Vehicle Advisory Committee; coordinates with the Bureau of Office Services to develop requests for proposals (RFP) and manage selection, negotiation and contracting of applicable projects and services; and develops and manages PennDOT's initial implementation plans for various transformational technologies.
